Understanding The Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC)
Who is eligible for coverage?
- • Those under 65 with a legal presence in the United States
- • Those who meet income guidelines by being above 138% of the Federal Poverty level.
- • Those not eligible for affordable employer sponsored coverage which provides minimum value.
When is the enrollment period?
The Open Enrollment Period opens once a year, typically at the end, and is open to everyone to enroll or make changes to their health insurance plans. The next Open Enrollment period is currently scheduled to run from Oct 15, 2023, through Dec 15, 2023.
Families and individuals may still qualify for the APTC through a Special Enrollment period if they've had a major life change within the last 60 days, referred to as a Qualifying Life Event (QLE), such as:
- • A change in marital status, such as getting married or divorced.
- • An increase in family size through either birth or adoption.
- • Recently moving to a new zip code.
- • Newly eligible and have income between 138% and 150% of the Federal Poverty Level
- • Recently losing other minimal essential coverage, including Medicaid coverage.

Adult vision and dental plans are not eligible for the APTC, but both can be purchased at any time directly through the insurance companies. Pediatric vision and dental plans qualify as essential coverage and can be purchased as part of a health insurance or stand-alone plan.

Are you a small business? Your company might qualify for the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP)
Your business may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit which could be worth up to 50% of the costs you pay for your employees' premiums (35% for non-profit employers).
